COOM was invented as a textual language for describing knowledge for product configurators. The language was initially defined by the company denkbares GmbH (Würzburg, Germany). In the further course, language development was supported by the "Knowledge Processing and Information Systems" group (Prof. Dr. Torsten Schaub) at the University of Potsdam and the Potassco Solutions GmbH.
